The question I get most in 2026 has shifted. It used to be "Woo or Shopify?". Now it's "Woo, Shopify, or SureCart — and which one plays nicest with the AI tools my team is suddenly using every day?"
That's a better question. Let me try to answer it honestly.
Disclosure up front: I'm a Senior Plugin Developer on SureCart at Brainstorm Force. I've also shipped production work on WooCommerce (Dokan, WP ERP, CartPulse — running on 100K+ stores) and Shopify (the Paysera gateway, used by 10K+ European merchants). So I'm biased on one of these three, and I'll tell you exactly where that bias kicks in.
I'm also going to argue that, for a custom build in 2026, SureCart is the platform AI tooling makes the most sense on. That's not a marketing line — it's a structural argument about how each platform's surface area interacts with LLM-assisted development. If by the end you disagree, the rest of the article is still useful as a decision matrix.

Now the long version.
What each platform actually is
WooCommerce is a toolkit. You get a database schema (orders, products, customers, line items), a hook system, a REST API, and 12+ years of extension ecosystem. Everything else — payments, shipping, tax — is plugins you assemble. Maximum flexibility, maximum responsibility.
Shopify is a product. They host your store, handle PCI, manage payouts, run the CDN, ship the apps marketplace. You theme it, configure it, and pay them per transaction (and per app). Minimum responsibility, minimum flexibility.
SureCart is somewhere new. The commerce engine runs on SureCart's hosted backend (so payments, fraud, tax, subscriptions are managed for you), but the storefront is fully native WordPress — Gutenberg blocks, Elementor widgets, Bricks elements, your theme. You don't run an order database; you compose checkout and product surfaces inside your WP site like any other content. Hosted commerce + native WP front end. That's the new shape.
I find this hybrid is what most "I have a WordPress site and I want to sell something" briefs actually want — they wanted the WP authoring story all along, and they didn't want to babysit fifteen Woo plugins to get there.
The Gutenberg / Elementor / Bricks story
This is where the difference between the three becomes physical.
On WooCommerce
Woo has Gutenberg blocks (Cart Block, Checkout Block) and ecosystem coverage in Elementor and Bricks via third-party addons. They work. But they're working against a templating system that originally lived in PHP shortcodes and override-able template files (woocommerce/templates/), and the result is a four-layer cake: PHP templates → block templates → Elementor / Bricks widgets → your theme overrides. The customizations are really very low using those.
A custom checkout that needs real customization — a B2B order form, multi-step checkout, dynamic pricing tiers — usually still ends up as PHP overrides plus a custom block. The "blocks" surface is improving every release, but it's catching up to a 12-year head start of legacy patterns.
Concretely: building a custom Bricks-driven checkout for a Woo store in 2026 is doable but you're constantly translating between three template languages. AI tooling helps but the LLM has to keep all four layers in its head at once, and the prompt context bloats fast.
On Shopify
Shopify has Liquid (their templating language) and a Storefront API for headless. They have an "online store" theme system that's separate from WordPress entirely. So if your client wants Gutenberg / Elementor / Bricks specifically — that conversation is over. Shopify isn't a WordPress thing.
You can run a hybrid: a WordPress content site fronting a Shopify checkout via the Storefront API and the Buy Button. I've done it. It's a perfectly fine pattern. But you're now writing two stacks and synchronising them.
Concretely: if "I want to design my checkout in Bricks" is the brief, Shopify is out, no matter how good its other properties are.
On SureCart
SureCart was designed for this conversation. Every commerce primitive — products, prices, line items, upsells, customer portals, subscriptions, the checkout itself — is a Gutenberg block. Each block has Elementor and Bricks counterparts. The blocks are typed, named consistently (surecart/buy-button, surecart/customer-dashboard, surecart/line-item-price), and they all read from the same hosted commerce backend.
So a custom Bricks-built checkout flow is just: drag the Bricks elements you need into your Bricks template, configure them, ship. No PHP overrides. No template-file fork. You're composing commerce inside your design tool the same way you compose content.
This isn't "blocks-but-better." It's "the platform was designed for builders to be the primary integration surface from day one."
Why SureCart is the all-in-one — and why that compounds with AI
Before the AI argument, the part that matters even without LLMs in the loop: SureCart is one engine where Woo is a kit of parts you have to buy.
If you want subscriptions on Woo, you buy Woo Subscriptions. Memberships? Woo Memberships. Recurring billing with smart dunning and follow-ups? AutomateWoo. Bookings? Woo Bookings. EU tax compliance? a separate tax plugin. A decent checkout block, an upsell engine, a customer portal, an affiliate program, software licensing — each is its own paid plugin, its own license to renew, its own update lane that a future Woo core release can quietly break. By the time a "simple subscription store" is wired up, the client is paying four to six annual licenses and the developer is shipping a plugin-compatibility checklist on every release.
SureCart bundles that surface. Subscriptions, memberships, customer portal, taxes, payments, fraud, dunning, upsells, affiliates, downloads, software licensing — same engine, same update, one account. For a "I just want to sell something" brief, that alone usually wins the argument before AI gets a vote.
Now the AI argument, on top of that.
SureCart isn't accidentally AI-friendly — they've shipped the surface for it on purpose. Spend ten minutes on developer.surecart.com and the shape becomes obvious: a complete REST API reference with predictable, resource-oriented URLs; machine-readable OpenAPI specifications for every major module (orders, subscriptions, products, customers, shipping, tax, licensing, affiliates); and action / filter hooks organised by feature area. Two pieces compound that:
- MCP support. SureCart exposes its commerce surface to AI clients through Model Context Protocol. A Claude Desktop user (or any MCP-aware client) can list products, create checkouts, manage subscriptions, or pull order data conversationally — no bespoke glue. For a plugin developer that's also a debugging tool: you ask the model to walk the live store state instead of grepping logs.
- The new WordPress Abilities API (WP 7.0). SureCart registers its operations as first-class WordPress abilities, which means any AI client that speaks the Abilities API — Claude Desktop, the Claude API, agent frameworks — can discover and invoke those operations directly. No per-tool connector to maintain. This is going to matter a lot over the next twelve months as Abilities support lands across the wider WordPress ecosystem, and SureCart is one of the first commerce engines to adopt it.
That's the structural argument restated concretely. Three properties make a platform LLM-friendly for custom-build work:
- Small, consistent public surface. LLMs reliably reason about APIs they can see all of. A single all-in-one engine with one well-named hook system beats a stack of fifteen plugins with fifteen accumulated ones.
- Predictable naming. When block names, hook names, and API shapes follow a single convention, an LLM can extrapolate from one example to a hundred. When they don't, the model hallucinates plausible-but-wrong names from whichever plugin it pattern-matched to.
- Machine-readable, in-sync docs. OpenAPI + MCP + Abilities API isn't a marketing checklist — it's the difference between an agent that writes code that compiles and one that confidently writes code that doesn't.

This explains why my own day-to-day with Claude Code on a SureCart plugin is genuinely faster than my day-to-day was on a Woo plugin three years ago. The LLM gets the whole shape of the platform in one or two example reads. It writes blocks that compile, hooks that fire, REST calls that return what it expects. On Woo the same agent will guess wc_get_order_meta when the right call is $order->get_meta() — and on top of that has to know which of the four subscription plugins is installed before it can even guess the renewal hook.
I'm not picking on Woo. Woo's surface is huge because Woo is the most extensible commerce platform on the web — that is its value. But "huge surface stitched together from a dozen paid plugins" and "LLM-friendly" are in genuine tension, and Woo hasn't (yet) shipped an MCP server or Abilities API coverage to bridge the gap.
A concrete time-to-build comparison
Same brief: a single-product checkout with a 3-step upsell flow, Bricks-designed, custom typography, on a brand site that already exists.

These aren't theoretical numbers. They're the kind of timeline I quote on real briefs.
Where Woo still wins (honestly)
I have to keep using Woo on certain projects. That's not a contradiction.
- Multivendor. Dokan-style marketplaces. The data model and ecosystem are unmatched. Don't rebuild this on anything else.
- B2B with custom pricing tiers, quote workflows, and account hierarchies. Wholesale Suite + Woo + a custom plugin still beats the others for this shape.
- Truly bespoke order workflows — multi-stage approvals, partial fulfilment, custom order statuses tied to ERP. Woo's hook surface is the right hammer.
- Total ownership. If "I must be able to walk away with the database" is a hard requirement, Woo (or self-hosted SureCart) beats Shopify.
Where Shopify still wins (honestly)
- Pure speed-to-launch with a non-technical operator. No engineer on the team, just a designer and a marketer? Shopify, every time.
- International tax + payment + currency handling at scale. They've solved this so completely it's almost boring.
- High-volume DTC with no custom design ambitions. Themes + a couple of apps + Shopify Payments. Done.
- Hardware retail (POS, inventory across locations). Shopify POS is genuinely good.
If your brief is one of these, don't fight it.
Where SureCart wins (the honest case)
- WP-native custom design with real commerce. Gutenberg, Elementor, or Bricks as the primary design surface, not an afterthought. This is the brief SureCart was built for.
- Subscription-heavy businesses that want the engine managed but the front end fully their own — SaaS sites, course platforms, membership programs.
- AI-assisted custom development. The smaller, more consistent surface lets you ship faster with Claude Code or Cursor in the loop, with fewer hallucinated APIs and fewer plumbing bugs.
- Builds that need to look like the brand site, not "a Shopify store." When the storefront has to live inside your existing WordPress design system, this is where SureCart pulls ahead.
- Indie / consultant builds. A solo developer can ship a polished, custom-designed, subscription-capable store in a week. That changes the economics of who can take which projects.
How I actually decide on a brief in 2026
When a new brief lands I run roughly this triage:
- Is this a marketplace, B2B with deep custom workflows, or ERP-coupled commerce? → WooCommerce.
- Does the team have zero engineering capacity, or is global compliance a hard "I can't think about this" requirement? → Shopify.
- Is this a custom-designed store on WordPress, with the design built in Gutenberg / Elementor / Bricks, where the brand and content matter? → SureCart.
- Is the team going to be using AI tooling (Claude Code, Cursor) every day for custom blocks and integrations? → Lean SureCart unless (1) overrides.
That last bullet is genuinely new. Two years ago it didn't matter — the AI tooling wasn't strong enough yet. Today, when I sit down with a junior engineer and we pair with Claude Code for a day, the throughput differential between "small consistent surface" and "large accreted surface" is something I can feel. The same prompt, on the same problem, ships clean code on SureCart and ships hallucinated-then-corrected code on Woo. Ten times a day. The compounding adds up.
A small worked example
I shipped a brand storefront last quarter for a small SaaS. Brief: marketing site in Bricks, three-tier subscription, customer dashboard, branded checkout, all in their existing WordPress stack.
What it would have taken on each:
- Woo + Bricks: ~3 weeks. Most of that time would have been gluing Woo's checkout into Bricks and writing the subscription portal.
- Shopify hybrid: ~2 weeks. The brand site stays in WP, the checkout lives on Shopify, and we sync customers via the Storefront API. But "the checkout looks like Shopify" is the result, and the client wanted a designed checkout.
- SureCart: 6 days. Bricks elements for product, price, checkout, customer portal. AI did most of the boilerplate; I did the brand-specific design and the two custom hooks for their analytics.
Six days vs three weeks isn't a 3× — it's a "client goes from quote to launched" change that opens up briefs you couldn't take before.
What I'd push back on
I want to be honest about where this argument is weakest:
- "SureCart is younger and the ecosystem is smaller." True. If you need a battle-tested 200-app ecosystem, Shopify and Woo win. The SureCart bet is that you don't need that ecosystem because the core surface covers more.
- "Hosted backend = lock-in." Partially true — you don't own the order database the way you do with self-hosted Woo. You can self-host SureCart's backend if you need to, but most teams won't. If "I must own the data" is a hard rule, Woo is your answer.
- "AI-friendliness is a temporary advantage." Maybe. If Woo's surface gets re-shaped to be more uniform, or if LLMs get better at large-context platforms, the gap closes. I don't think it closes soon — accumulated surface area doesn't shrink — but it's worth noting.
I'd rather you read those caveats and come back to me with a specific brief than walk away thinking SureCart is magic. None of these platforms are magic. They're tools with shapes.
Wrap
WooCommerce stays the deep extensibility winner. Shopify stays the managed, ship-it-tomorrow winner. SureCart is, in 2026, the custom-designed-WordPress-store-built-with-AI winner — because the surface is small, consistent, and builder-native, and that combination is what AI tooling rewards.
